Adjusting the BER
(Bit Error Rate )
MMDVM Pi-Star Hotspot

What is the Bit Error Rate

If your DMR transmitter is not exactly on the same frequency of your hotspot, you can experience audio drop out and/or distorted audio. The alignment procedure to resolve this is relatively easy.

Measuring the BER?

Log into your MMDVM hot spot and select  Dashboard  from the top menu.
Key your transmitter for approximately 3 seconds on a neutral talk group, such as 4000 or 9990.
Under 1.0% is acceptable, but should be as close to 0.0% as possible.
The example below shows 0.3%.

Alignment Procedure

From the Configuration page, select  Expert  from the top menu.

  Now select   MMDVMHost

Scroll about halfway down the page to the Modem section.
The  RXOffset  is the field to be adjusted.

Add 50 to the RXOffset value (Save Changes).
If the BER rises, subtract 50 from the original setting.
Continue zeroing in until the lowest BER is shown.
You can then fine tune this by using steps of 10.

Once you've found the lowest BER, change the TXOffset to the same value and Save Changes.

If you have more than one DMR radio, you may need to come up with an average between the two. Anything below 1.0% will work, but get them as close to 0.0% as possible.

Enjoy your DMR experience.
