QHM-22 / 22D Difference

Both are compatible with any radio requiring the Kenwood K1 connector (Kenwood, Anytone, BTech, Baofeng, Wouxun, etc)

The difference is the PTT configuration. The QHM-22D is configured with a second PTT button for compatibility with UV82 series radios, such as the 82HP, 82L, 82, GT5, GT5L, etc These radios have Upper/Lower Dual PTT switch capability. This allows the user to select between A/B via the microphone.

Note: If your radio does not have a dual PTT button, the microphone is still compatible with a standard Kenwood K1 PTT. It will not add the option to your radio if it does not have that capability.

Speaker / Microphone

Over the past several years I have had my fair share of Spkr/Microphones. I started with inexpensive eBay specials working on the assumption that all Spkr/Micr were basically the same. On the recommendation of a friend I spent a few extra dollars and picked up a QHM-22. The difference became evident immediately.

My radios vary from inexpensive dual band analog handhelds to high end digital. Fortunately, the Kenwood style K1 connector is compatible with most, so interchangeability is not an issue. Kenwood, BTech, Anytone, Baofeng, TYT, etc. all use the same connector.

Receive Audio

The first major difference became apparent immediately after it was plugged in. The audio quality coming through the QHM22 was clearer than what was coming through some of the radios directly. The speaker element is actually larger than some of those in the radios. At high volume levels, there was no distortion.

Transmit Audio

The quality is full with plenty of frequency range. The audio reports I received were excellent.

Shielding

This is often overlooked when purchasing a Spkr/Micr. If you are using a digital mode such as DMR, microphones with poor shielding will allow RF to return back into the audio line, creating a pulsing or 'motorboat' effect. The QHM22 cable shielding blocked all stray RF.

Lapel Clip

The lapel clip is a solid metal on metal 8 position clip with a strong spring. Once attached to a jacket or shirt, falling off accidentally is not a possibility.

External Earpiece Jack

The lower side has a 3.5mm earpiece jack. This is handy when using the radio for security work in a business, church, etc.

I've used it a few times when it was raining and it has remained unaffected by the dampness.

My less expensive ones were totally unusable on DMR, so one day while cleaning the bench they hit the trash. I've had mine for over a year now and love it. If you hear me on the air using a Spkr/Micr, rest assured, this is the one I'm using.
